MemeScanr vs iPhone Photos app: key differences
The iPhone Photos app and MemeScanr aren't competitors — they do different jobs. Photos is a viewer and library manager. MemeScanr is a cleanup tool that detects duplicates, memes, screenshots, and blurry shots, then helps you review and delete them with a swipe UI. Most people run both apps side by side.
The short answer
Photos = viewing, albums, Memories montages, iCloud sync, shared libraries, editing. MemeScanr = detecting what to delete, grouping duplicates, reviewing forgotten photos, private vault, compression. Photos does not detect duplicates, does not detect blurry shots, does not surface memes as a category, and has no swipe-to-delete interface.

Does MemeScanr delete my photos from iPhone Photos?
Only when you explicitly tell it to. When you swipe left on a photo in Memory Lane or tap "nuke the junk" in Clean, MemeScanr asks iOS to move those photos to your Recently Deleted album where they stay for 30 days before permanent removal. You can always recover them in that window, either from Recently Deleted or from iCloud if you use iCloud Photos.
Does MemeScanr replace iPhone Photos?
No, and it's not trying to. You'll still use Photos for viewing, albums, iCloud sync, and editing. MemeScanr adds what Photos doesn't have: duplicate detection, blurry detection, swipe review, vault, and compression. Think of it as a cleanup utility that runs alongside Photos, not a replacement.
Which one should I use for private photos?
MemeScanr. Apple's Hidden album still lives inside the Photos app and syncs to iCloud by default. MemeScanr's Backroom moves photos out of the Photos app entirely, doesn't sync to iCloud, and is locked with Face ID + PIN. Read more in the Backroom feature page.
